Community Banking Up Close: SGBC Moultrie Gives Local Students An Inside Look
This April, as the nation recognizes Community Banking Month, South Georgia Banking Company is demonstrating what community banking is all about — investing in people, strengthening local economies, and building a brighter future for the communities we call home.
In the spirit of that commitment, the South Georgia Banking Company Moultrie team recently welcomed a group of Colquitt County High School (CCHS) students for an engaging presentation on careers in banking and a guided tour of their Moultrie banking center. The visit was made possible through Project Purpose, a forward-thinking, multi-pronged workforce development program designed to connect high school students with local industry opportunities right here in Southwest Georgia.
Project Purpose is a joint initiative of the Moultrie-Colquitt County Development Authority and the Moultrie-Colquitt County Chamber of Commerce, working hand-in-hand with local schools and employers to position the region for excellence in workforce development, job growth, and long-term economic impact. The participating students are actively exploring various career pathways, and it was their own curiosity about the banking industry that brought them through the doors of South Georgia Banking Company.
“Community banks exist to serve the communities they’re part of, and that goes far beyond processing transactions,” said Neil Shumans, Senior Vice President and Moultrie Market President. “When these students walked through our doors, they weren’t just taking a tour. They were seeing firsthand how a community bank operates, the diverse career opportunities available right here in Moultrie, and how banking touches nearly every aspect of local life. That’s what community banking is all about.”
During the visit, students had the opportunity to learn about the wide range of roles within a community bank — from retail banking and lending to operations, compliance, and finance — and were encouraged to consider how a career in banking could allow them to make a meaningful difference in their own community.
Community Banking Month, observed each April, is a national celebration recognizing the vital role that community banks play in the economy. Unlike large national institutions, community banks like South Georgia Banking Company are locally operated and deeply invested in the success of their neighbors, businesses, and schools
South Georgia Banking Company is honored to partner with Project Purpose and thanks the Moultrie-Colquitt County Development Authority, the Moultrie-Colquitt County Chamber of Commerce, Colquitt County High School, and — most importantly — the students who took time to explore what a future in community banking could look like.
