Earth Day Spotlight: Sweet Sustainability with Randi & John Hickman
For Randi and John Hickman, the husband-and-wife team behind Hickman Honey Co., beekeeping is more than producing honey. It is about protecting an essential part of our ecosystem.
“Bees are vital to everything around us,” Randi shares. “They support the food we eat and the environments we depend on. If we take care of them, they take care of us.”
Together, the Hickmans practice sustainable beekeeping, ensuring their hives remain healthy while minimizing environmental impact. Their work supports pollination, strengthens local agriculture, and contributes to a more resilient ecosystem across South Georgia.
For the Hickmans, the hands-on nature of beekeeping is part of what makes the work so meaningful. Maintaining hives, monitoring bee health, and adapting to seasonal changes all require patience and respect for the natural world. These are values that guide their approach every day.
Beyond their work in the field, the Hickmans are passionate about education. They encourage others to understand the critical role pollinators play and how small, everyday choices can help protect them.
“Even simple things like planting pollinator-friendly flowers or being mindful about product use can help,” they explain. “People have more impact than they realize.”
Pollinators like bees are responsible for supporting a significant portion of the crops we rely on every day, yet they face growing challenges from habitat loss and environmental change. Through their work, the Hickmans are helping raise awareness and inspire action within their community.
This Earth Day, SGBC encourages everyone to support local, think sustainably, and consider the small ways we can all contribute to a healthier environment. Because meaningful change often starts close to home.
